AN OFFICIAL SERIES OF THE INTERNATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL FEDERATION

As pharmacy evolves, working capital means more than ever

If you’re running or working in a community pharmacy today, you’re probably being asked to do more than you were a few years ago.

Patients increasingly turn to pharmacies first for advice, treatment and reassurance. Healthcare systems are recognizing the value of pharmacists in improving access to care, while new clinical services continue to expand the profession’s role in supporting healthier communities.

It’s an exciting direction of travel, and one reflected in FIP’s Pharmacy for All initiative. But it also brings new responsibilities and new business decisions. Every new service, every improvement to the patient experience and every investment in your team usually has one thing in common: It costs money before it creates value.

Whether you’re fitting out a consultation room, investing in dispensing technology, purchasing additional stock ahead of a busy period, bringing in locum cover or introducing a new patient service, the investment often comes long before the return. That’s the reality of running a pharmacy.

Even busy, successful pharmacies experience periods where cashflow doesn’t perfectly match demand. Medicines need to be purchased before they’re dispensed. Suppliers expect payment before reimbursement arrives. Staff need supporting through busy periods before additional income is generated.

These are not signs of a business under pressure. They’re often signs of a business that’s growing, adapting and responding to the needs of its community.

Around the world, pharmacies are being trusted with a greater role in healthcare. In many countries, pharmacists are delivering more clinical services, supporting earlier intervention and helping patients access care closer to home. As that role grows, pharmacies also need the confidence to invest in the people, technology and facilities that make those services possible. Working capital can help create that confidence.

The right funding is not simply about access to money. It is about having capital available when opportunities arise, without lengthy processes or unnecessary complexity. Whether the need is planned or unexpected, being able to access funding quickly and choose a repayment structure that reflects the rhythm of the business allows pharmacy owners to focus on serving patients instead of worrying about timing.

At YouLend, we’ve funded more than 400,000 businesses across more than 10 countries. We’ve learned that growing businesses value funding that is straightforward to access, responsive when it matters and flexible enough to support how they actually operate. Many seek finance not because they’re struggling, but because they’re planning ahead and want the confidence to invest at the right moment.

The same is true for many pharmacies.

Funding can help pharmacy owners prepare for seasonal demand, secure stock when it’s available, invest in automation, improve consultation spaces, introduce new services or manage temporary staffing requirements. Every pharmacy is different, so the funding that supports it should be able to adapt to different priorities and different stages of growth.

That’s why we’ve chosen to support FIP’s Pharmacy for All initiative. We believe that helping pharmacies thrive requires more than recognizing their growing clinical role. It also means recognizing the practical realities of running a sustainable pharmacy business. As more pharmacies expand the care they provide, they should also have access to financial solutions that are simple to access, flexible enough to meet changing needs and designed to help them invest with confidence.

As the profession continues to evolve, conversations about the future of pharmacy shouldn’t focus only on clinical services and healthcare policy. They should also recognise the practical realities of running sustainable pharmacy businesses. Investing in better patient care often begins with having the ability to invest in the business itself.

Pharmacies have always adapted to meet the changing needs of their communities. Ensuring they have access to the right financial tools can help them continue doing exactly that.

At YouLend, we’re proud to support pharmacy businesses as they invest in their future and proud to support the organizations helping shape the future of pharmacy worldwide.
